OFF Festival 2016: The DiS Preview
OFF Festival 2016: The DiS Preview
sammymaine by Sammy Maine August 4th, 2016

Now that our humble country is ultimately a trash fire full of Leave voters and Tories who wish to take what little joy we have left away, it's nice to get out once in a while. Trouble is, festivals abroad can cost a pretty penny, but not OFF festival – a little gem of a party that boasts some of the best up-and-coming talent from Poland and beyond, for half the price of your usual dealings.

Based in Katowice – just an hour or so outside of Krakow – the festival itself is located just outside of the main town, which means you get to hang out in Katowice's brilliant bars, cafes, and shops before taking a 10-minute bus to watch some seriously great bands. First and foremost, they're an eclectic festival, welcoming the likes of Belle & Sebastian and Neutral Milk Hotel alongside Leif and Run the Jewels. It's not just the bigger names that hog the limelight either – OFF are renowned for giving up-and-coming Polish talent the platform it deserves.

The big names this year come from the Mercury nominated Anohni, The Kills, Wiley, Devendra Banhart, and Daniel Avery, with Kero Kero Bonito, Yung Lean and Beach Slang also making appearances across the weekend. Polish treats include Brodka, Lotto, and Syny, and that's just the beginning of the home-grown outputs to discover.

Food and drink is located on site but you're only allowed to drink booze in a designated area – a problem for some but a decent idea for most, meaning you can actually have a breather with your pint instead of downing them during every performance. With four stages and a small site, it's easy to catch something of just about everyone's set, meaning you'll probably stumble upon a new favourite artist (or three) within the first night. OFF is the chance to see your already-favoured artists in an intimate setting, whilst discovering a new breed of Poland's finest.
