Chan Marshall aka Cat Power has explained why she cancelled a series of live shows, including a date in London, earlier this year (see our report from the time here).
At the time the singer's label, Matador, reported that she was cancelling dates due to health reasons; now, Marshall has described those problems in more detail.
She spoke to The New York Times:
"I was looking at death. I wanted to die... I asked God, I said, 'I'm tired, I can't do this'. I was asking him to just take me.
"Even playing all my shows I was always intoxicated, always kind of not there, which led to the depression. It was more about the uncomfortableness with just being in my own skin, and that's why the alcohol was always with me."
Marshall also revealed that she underwent psychiatric treatment for her substance abuse. She announced that her next album has a working title of Sun, and that she's considering recording another album of covers a la 2000's The Covers Record.
