Fields fall foul of chart rules with 'digital vinyl' release
Mike_Diver by Mike Diver March 21st, 2007

Excellent indie-gazers Fields have angered rule-makers over at Charts HQ by releasing their new single, 'Charming The Flames', on something alleged experts are calling 'digital vinyl'. Wait... wait... right, now I've closed my mouth.

The single - out March 26, a week ahead of their Everything Last Winter LP - is banned from the charts in its digital vinyl form. Explanation? Okay: the b-side of the vinyl is etched with a code redeemable at the band's own online store (click) in exchange for one of a selection of non-album tracks, including a cover of My Bloody Valentine's 'When You Sleep'.

Makes sense. The cover that is. 'Digital vinyl' makes my head hurt.

Atlantic Records' digital manager, Jack Melhuish, commented:

“We feel strongly that this release is a great combination of the benefits of both physical and digital, allowing for the importance felt by many music fans of owning a tangible format as well as harnessing the flexibility and immediacy afforded by downloads. The Fields 'Charming the Flames' digital vinyl straddles both of these with a beautiful etched 7” product and choice of downloads for the fans”

Yep.
