Dido's 'Life For Rent' album has landed at number one in the UK album charts. No surprise there you may think, but it's not only gone to number one, but has also become the fastest-selling British album for six years.
'Life For Rent', remarkable only for its utter insipidness, has sold a staggering 255,000 copies since Monday, suggesting that there are a lot of people out there with severe hearing disorders. Either that, or Mother's Day has fallen at the wrong time of year. The figure makes it the highest first-week seller since Oasis' equally dire 'Be Here Now', tolerated at the time simply because it was so laugh-out-loud awful. I mean, who doesn't laugh to 'Magic Pie' even now?
Dido's latest disc of glossed-up melancholy is expected to reach 350,000 copies sold by Monday. If it does, it'll beat the first-week sales achieved by The Beatles' collection of number ones, '1', released in 2000.
Depressingly, 'Life For Rent's nearest rival was Robbie Williams' quick-buck release 'Live At Knebworth'.
