Lisa 'Left Eye' Lopes

Supernova

Label: Arista

ab by Anita Bhagwandas September 23rd, 2001

With all her philosophical and musical knowledge Lisa ‘Left Eye’ Lopes opening track starts with a profound statement ‘life is like a park’. Yes Freud would have surely been bowled over by her imagination. Its hard to pinpoint just one fault on this album, simply because there are so many to choose from. Hip hop has come on leaps and bounds over the last few months with a rock rap fusion not to mention a lot of jazz, funk and old school vibes creeping in. Left eye merely ignores any of the progress that’s been made. In their heyday TLC were pioneers but Left Eye on her own looks a little limp, a little lost and just a bit forlorn. Times have simply changed and instead of changing with them, she’s stuck in the 80’s with cheesy lyrics, awful samplings and little else. The addition of ‘En Vogue Wannabe’s’ Blaque adds further discredit. This former arsonist would be better advised to set something on fire, surely she couldn’t get that so terribly, terribly wrong.
