Adam Green

Friends Of Mine

Label: Rough Trade Release Date: 23/06/2003

Oh Adam Green, how I love thee.

Come hither and pay heed, child, as I extol the virtues of Mr Green, former Moldy Peaches sidekick to the girl who looked a bit like Grotbags off Emu’s ‘Pink Windmill Show’.

Some well lush string arrangements over 14 of the album’s 15 tracks give this a classic, timeless feel, with Green’s crooning and unique lyrical approach setting him head and shoulders above most other singer/songwriters. Aged only 21, it seems he has already come of age, with each song clocking in around the 2-3 minute mark there is not ONE shit track here. Not one. Really. Indeed, it feels some of them are way too short.

Sweet like honey songs for around the campfire, for your open mic nights, your bedtime stories, your entertainment. A mildly sarcastic edge with a healthy splattering of old-fashioned vulgarity won’t get these playlisted on Radio 2 in a hurry, but that’s ok; Adam Green can stay our own little cult secret. Don’t you worry. The mighty Rough Trade can do no wrong at the moment.

Overall it’s a heartfelt, if a little weird affair (“I’m sorry that I could be that way to you” - ‘Frozen In Time’). Then there’s stuff like “I wanna choose to die and be buried with a Rubix Cube” and “There’s no wrong way to fuck a girl with girl no legs/ Just tell her you love her as she’s crawling away”, proving that you can take the boy out of the Moldy Peach, but you can’t take the Moldy Peach out of the boy. Bless.
