Bad Astronaut

Bad Astronaut Vs Armchair Martian

Label: Owned & Operated Release Date: 10/09/2001

DiSvsMatt by Mat Hocking January 12th, 2002

Bit of a strange one this. It’s a split EP with Bad Astronaut & Armchair Martians playing each others songs, which is a lot more confusing when you actually listen to it as both band’s sound pretty much the same. So you’re not sure whether each band is playing in the style of the other band or if they’re playing the other band’s songs how they themselves would play them. Add to this the fact that Miguel Barron from the Chicago band *Deminer *wrote a song as well & you really are confused because you don’t know who’s playing it.

Ooook. Well, musically it’s harmless enough folky rock which moves along at a pretty laid back pace. Armchair Martians have a kind of Southern American accent going on which brings to mind images of a smoky bar in Texas with a load of red necks parked out back ready to start a fight with anyone taking so much as a glance at Nancy.

As you may know, Bad Astronaut is fronted by Joey Cape but please treat this as his chill out side project because there really is no comparisons to Lagwagon's up beat punkiness in their dusty acoustic rock style. Although this CD is an original concept it only serves to cause confusion for anyone unfamiliar with the bands as to who’s playing what. But you can kinda guess from the vibe that runs throughout that their respective material is not gonna be played much different anyway.
