Houston, we're all Potter trained
Houston, we're all Potter trained
jvergho by Julia Vergho February 20th, 2002
The next person I see on the tube, nose buried in a Harry Potter book, I will have to kill. No magic required, I'll just strangle them with my bare hands. Why? Because Harry Potter is grossly overrated and I find adults reading kids' books mighty pretentious. What do they think they're doing, those bankers trying very hard to give the impression they're in touch with their inner child? Men rambling on about how much they're in touch with their feminine side were bad enough as it was, so why bother going for an under-ten mentality now? 'But Harry Potter is so cute!' I hear you cry. Yeah right, someone explain to me just what is adorable about a geeky kid sporting monstrous glasses and bad hair? Bill Gates might have said that we should be nice to nerds because 'nerds are the future', but I find that very hard to imagine. Not nerds like Harry Potter, anyway. My theory is that the world of Harry Potter is one big hallucination, anyway. I want the drugs he's on, because mine never seem to work that well. I certainly haven't been associated with a tame owl. Ever. Coming back to Harry Potter's readership, the vast majority of that are adults. How sad is that? With so many good books for grown-ups (and I don't mean 'grown-up' books as in filth) around, do they have to pick one for and about kids? Maybe peer pressure is the cause of the Potter addiction, that would also explain the hordes of Harry Potter look-a-likes crowding our playgrounds. The Potter peer pressure seems to work for kids and adults alike. Only that the adults tend to stick to the books, while the kids think that the 'Harry Potter DIY potion making kit' is the best thing since sliced Pokemon. It's merchandise galore. It's only a book for christ's sake. And not even a cult one at that. It's one big fat artificial hype, that's about it. Make mine a knitted Harry Potter looroll doll, please.
