Peel celebrations spawn new website
disnews by DiS News October 13th, 2005
Today is not only John Peel Day across the world, but also marks the launch of a new website bearing the late DJ's name: JohnPeelMusic.

A joint venture between Dandelion Records and Universal Music, the site will aim to discover and promote new music, much in the way Peel did on his show. The site will be supervised by Peel's son, Tom Ravenscroft, and Peel's agent and former Dandelion director Clive Selwood will also be involved.

Bands will be able to upload their own material to the site, where readers can rate the songs. Selwood said the following:

"For 30-odd years John was the point of reference for the best new cutting edge talent and now there's no real replacement. The ethos behind this site is to fill that void and in turn reveal the next generation of recording stars."

In related news, one-time Radio 1 DJ Andy Kershaw has told reporters that he doesn't think Peel would appreciate a day in his honour, at least not in the manner that Radio 1 have adopted.

"John wouldn't have liked it. He'd think it was maudlin," said Kershaw. "He would also object on the grounds it was nostalgia-driven. He'd think we ought to spend less time doing stuff like this, and more time ploughing through stacks of records looking for the next new band."
