Hinterland

Got A New Drug EP

Label: Release Date: 01/12/2004

7501
domgourlay by Dom Gourlay January 28th, 2005

If the Stereophonics ever replaced the tawdry yawn of their everyday wares with the bluster and spite of a hundred Mclusky records fronted by David Yow, this is probably what they would sound like.

Hinterland have the tunes, some nice melodies and even the odd sensual lyric (see 'Where's The Comedian?')but then they also have an affirmation to smear every note and sentence in petroleum before slicing the charred remains with the finest shards of cut crystal this side of Anchor Supplies.

'Got A New Drug' bumps along like a latterday Six. By Seven, almost stalling on the chorus before hitting the tracks running like Thomas the jet-powered-actually Tank Engine complete with the noise of a thousand geigercounters to boot.

Similarly, 'On And On' brings the noise factor to an even grander plethora of density that even the legendary Steve Albini would be proud of. In fact, a Hinterland/Albini combination would probably bring the Statue Of Liberty to its knees, and even Professor Jack Hall wouldn't be able to stop that.
